1. How can you ensure that your struggling readers have access to texts they can easily read? By having as many phonics and english books available. If students run into any difficulty reading books that are at their level, they can pick a phonics book that can simplify it to make it easier for students struggling to read.
2. How can you foster a learning environment in which students have many opportunities to practice reading? Create opportunities where the student can sit down with you for a one on one before the day it out just so he, she, or they are able to catch up with you by the end of the day.
3. Describe ways in which you can model fluent reading in your classroom throughout the day. By simply developing a strategy that would allow students to self-monitor themselves without them becoming over-reliant on me as the teacher telling them if they are right or wrong involving any kind of problem solving exercise. This may involve going over subjects multiple times within a given time-frame until they have gather up enough confidence to do it on their own. Repetition is key and is technique so vastly underrated in today's teaching approach.
Although there is never enough time to do so with enough students, conferencing with students individually makes a world of a difference for both myself as a teacher and the student. I need that one-on-one time to get a feel for where the student is at and where I need to get them. While formal assessments like exit slips do help me keep track of student understanding I find that working one on one gives me a much better gauge of the students' understanding and what they need to work on.
ReplyDeleteI also agree a major key is repetition. And that's not just with reading either. I feel like the routine and repetitiveness of a process is what really makes it stick with a student and that foundation helps them to build on their knowledge.
Absolutely, one-on-one assessment is essential in learning each individual student's learning progress. This can be facilitated by the use of technology in addition to the traditional methods. :)
